Letters from Trumka Supporters

Brother Trumka’s Supporters Are Invited
To Inform  Us  About  His Achievements

By Harry Kelber

Let’s be fair.

We’ve made some sharp criticisms of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka  and his style of union  leadership (and there’ll be more to come), but we really ought to give his supporters  a chance to talk about his accomplishments.

That’s why we’re inviting his defenders to use our  two web sites and my e-mail box (listed below) throughout June to answer two simple questions:   ”Why I  would vote for Trumka in a real election? And why I am pleased  with his performance?”

Keep your e-mails to 200 words. The content of your letters will not be edited.

Could Trumka Win a Real Election for AFL-CIO President?

The truth is that Trumka has not faced a competitor for either of the AFL-CIO’s top spots he has held. He wasn’t really tested for President or for Secretary-Treasurer before, but won them essentially by default --not a true test. It’s time to take a survey of both his ability and his  principles,  because he expects to hold on to the presidency for at least eight years and probably longer. Is he the kind of leader we can trust? Can he provide inspiring leadership?

We’d like to hear from working women, African-Americans  and Latinos  about what they think of Trumka and what he has done to improve their lives. These constituencies,  together,  represent  the majority of AFL-CIO members, and will continue to do so, to an even greater extent, in the coming years.

If any of you said you would like to vote  for Trumka in a competitive election, tell us why,  and whether you are pleased or disappointed with his performance? Your letters will be printed, as promised.—Harry Kelber
